Today, rainbow flags fly en mass at Pride celebrations worldwide. Baker’s flags waved in commemoration and went on to be mass-produced in an ever-lasting symbol of hope, community, and inclusion for LGBTQIA+ individuals throughout the decades to come. Each of the eight colors had a meaning: Pink: Sex. In Baker’s memoir, Rainbow Warrior, he wrote: ‘The crowd was as much a part of the show as the band. The tragedy ignited a 30,000-person candlelit march in Milk’s honor. Three years later, Milk challenges Baker to create a symbol for the gay community, and the end product is the first rainbow LGBTQ flag.
